So this happened in a village in Bavaria today. The 78 y/o drivers claims that his car suddenly started to accelerate on it's own. Yeah right!
This looks like an auto knob to me. Anyway, as you can see by the wallpaper and furniture he crashed into the living room of a couple who is also in their 70s. The police estimates the the damage on the car alone to be around € 8K, which seems a bit low to me.

Tempomat, huh.
I found it amusing to enable cruise control when leaving the tollgates while on the road in Italy and France ... pay, drive of normally, then punch in the CC set to 220kph. Worked like a charm, even though I had to stop soon enough due to traffic *ahem* rules.
My car of choice back then, an A5 Sportback 3.0 TDI, will pretty much floor it for you, so I'd imagine the Bimmer did just that after being (unwillingly or accidentially) ordered to do so.
It's usually a good thing to know what all the levers and buttons in your car do if you push, pull or adjust them.

The € 8K damages are for medical costs of the buyer of that X something. He or she's had severe eye trauma for quite some time.

Mine does the same thing. However, it being a manual (and me not being old) tends to prevent these mishaps. No kickdown, no upshifts and twice as many pedals to disengage the cruise control.
I'm very glad the Yaris my grandfather (1925) drives is a manual. He might hit things while parking but he's not going to drive into buildings.

I fully agree. Having your car make the situation worse is not something that should happen if you make a mistake once in a while ... I could see my mother having trouble with this kind of technical bits, too, but then she'd be alert enough to hit the brake, which should usually shut CC off. That said, back in the day there was a kind of handgas that you could fixate in a certain position to keep a certain speed.

I thought cruise control wasn't supposed to work at low speeds?

To be honest, I have no idea from which point upwards it works in that car, but when I activated it, it did a kickdown and went off with WOT.
